UK Grand Masters & Masters Championship Report - Welsh Harp SA - 11th/12th June 2005

Report - Stephen Janering                                Full Results

The GP14 Masters championships were held at the Welsh Harp reservoir on June 11th and 12th, consisting of 2 races each day, with one discard. 17 visitors and 15 home boats were greeted by a light North Easterly breeze on Saturday. The first race was won by Richard Instone and James Goodfellow from Chase SC, Graham Flynn and Frank Nickless took second place, and Paul Owen and Andy Hately took third.

The second race started in much of the same Force 1 -2 NE, but after the first lap this wind increased slightly and swung to the East. This time line honours were taken by Martin Brennan and Alistair Knott from Hollingworth Lake SC, John Dixon and Leo Dixon took second place, and Richard Instone and James Goodfellow took third.

On Sunday the first race was postponed by half an hour partly to help those still recovering from the evening meal and the live band on Saturday night, but mainly because the race officer had issues with an alarm clock and arrived late. Racing eventually got underway in a Force 2 – 3 SSW wind, Richard Instone and James Goodfellow secured overall victory with a race to spare by scoring another race win, followed home again by Paul Owen and Andy Hately, and Graham Flynn and Frank Nickless.

In the final race Graham Flynn and Frank Nickless got a great start under black flag and went on to win (and secure second overall) from Paul Owen and Andy Hately, and John Salomonson and Gavin Waldron.

A great selection of prizes were offered for winners in each category, kindly supplied by various event sponsors including Fullers Brewery, Harken, Sailing Holidays Ltd, Speed Sails and the Welsh Harp Boat Centre.
