Bright sunshine and a light and shifty breeze greeted the 11 boats who ignored the
weather forecast and decided to brave the infamous Midland northerly.
The first race got underway in reasonably good order, in spite of a large windshift in
the last few seconds making it almost impossible to start on starboard tack. Carl Jeffs
and Jim Toothil emerged smelling of roses and built up a seemingly unassailable lead.
Their dominance was questioned later in the race as a tight 3 way battle between Jeffs,
Graham Flynn and Andy Hately developed and all three finished within ten seconds of each
other, Jeffs just taking the race.
The second race produced less drama, though Andy Hateley and Shane Mcarthy were adjuded
to be over the line. This time Flynn crewed by Frank Nicholas stamped their authority on
the race leading from start to finish, with Jeffs second.
With all to play for only 7 boats thought the 3rd race worth attempting. Flynn promptly
disappeared over the horizon and Jeffs' retirement allowed elder statesman John Salomonson
crewed by young turn John Hackett to take second place in the race and third overall.
