Roy Nettleship
The
Nottingham Sailing Club GP14 Open this year returned to its traditional date of the May
Day Bank Holiday, and a fleet of 15 boats enjoyed a glorious day sailing in a firm
south-westerly breeze, enabling courses which involved impressively long beats and runs.
Starting
immediately upstream of Holme Sluice where the River Trent is widest, Jonathan McGovern
(Hollingworth Lake) won the first race in fine style, but had the misfortune to snag the
chain on a starting mark in the second race which, like the third, was won by Richard
Instone (Chase) with John Salomonson (S Staffs) taking third in all three races. Behind those three there was quite a scrap, with
Roy Nettleship (Nottingham) scoring two fourths and one swamping, and Ian Hankinson
(Aldridge) staying ahead of the rest. The
fleet also included visitors from Nantwich, and the enthusiam shown by the seven home
boats confirmed the growing strength of the Class at Nottingham.
The
day finished as always, with afternoon tea to accompany the Prize-giving.
