Derwent Reservoir hosted the GP14 North East Area Championships on the 29th and 30th
April. With the backdrop of the North Pennines and sun shining on the three and a half
miles of water, boats set off in light North Easterly winds for the first of two back
to back races on the Saturday.
The lead was closely contested between Mark and Duncan Greenhalgh (Lochmaben Sailing
Club); Richard Instone and Linda Estaugh (Chase Sailing Club); and Peter and William
Gardner (Combs Sailing Club). In hot pursuit were the only all female crew of Ann Penny
and Andrea Thomson (Derwent Sailing Club), who on rounding mark three of the triangle
and sausage course, lost the crew over the side as a toe strap snapped!
Race 2 followed with the same three lead boats, with Mark and Duncan sailing through to
win yet again. Meanwhile there was a battle between boats in the middle of the fleet.
Sunday brought even lighter winds, with John Evans the O.O.D abandoning racing.
