This is the first
time Pagham YC has hosted a GP14 championship and the organisers made every effort to make
the competitors feel welcome. Pagham YC is delightfully situated on the edge of the South
coast. Enthusiastic club members are currently redeveloping the clubhouse to enhance the
sailing and training facilities for the local community. Motorised winches remove the
strain of recovering boats over the shingle beach.
The weather on
Saturday was grey. Our very experienced race officers, Peter and Carol-Anne Pocock,
prepared everything except the elusive wind which failed to materialise and eventually
racing was called off for the day. In contrast, Sunday provided a pleasant force 3 wind
and a keen fleet was soon afloat. All four races were held on a compact Olympic triangular
course.
In race one, Carl
Jeffs & Jim Toothill of Trimpley SC led all the way followed by Tim & Hilary
Davies of Chelmarsh SC. In race two, Jeffs was leading with Roger Walton & Sue Tomkins
of BTYC taking second place. In race three, Jeffs was again in the lead with Davies
following until overtaken on the last beat by Mike Abbott & Debra Harris of BTYC. By
race four, Jeffs was already the Championship winner and relaxed too much on the start
line allowing Abbott to forge ahead and win the final race claiming the trophy for the
first boat from the Southern area.
