West Midlands Volvo Youth Championships The Chase Sailing Club

Report - Jerry Jones, Press Officer SSSC Six young people from SSSC competed in the Volvo Youth Championships over the weekend 8/9 July racing against 34 of the best sailors in the Midlands, they came home 1st, 2nd and 4th all of them beating a boat from the UK National Squad.

Team South Staffs

The wind was very strong gusting up to force 5 which suited the GP14 dinghy but it really tested their skill and many boats were blown over as the South Staffs team sailed on. After 7 races and 10 hard hours on the water the event winner was John Warburton from Brewood crewed by Jane Alexander from Hednesford with one first, three seconds and two thirds. Laura Jakeman from Heath Hayes crewed by Reanne Parry from Newport gave then a real run for their money with three firsts but found the very windy conditions on Sunday difficult and let John get away having to settle for 2nd over all. Fourth was James Goodfellow from Stafford crewed by Chris Warburton.
